Parashat VaYakhel & P'kudei - March 25th

Exodus 35.1 — Exodus 38.20

"For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah." (Psalm 61:3-4)

This Parasha is about God's splendor and glory - the tabernacle, its design, how it was made and finished. We see the same picture in the haftarah about the temple.

Exodus 38.21 — Exodus 40.38

Exodus 40.9-11: “Then you shall take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and consecrate it and all its furniture; and it shall become holy. You shall also anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and consecrate the altar; and the altar shall be most holy. You shall also anoint the laver and its base, and consecrate it.”

The Targum reads: “You shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it; you shall consecrate it for the sake of the royal crown of the house of Judah, and of the King Messiah who is destined to redeem Israel at the end of days. You shall anoint the altar of the burnt offerings and all its utensils, and consecrate the altar, and the altar will be most holy for the sake of the crown of the priesthood of Aaron and his sons, and of Elijah the high priest who is to be sent at the end of the exiles. You shall anoint the laver and its base, and consecrate it for the sake of Joshua, your attendant, the head of the Sanhedrin of his people, by whom the land is to be divided, and (for the sake of) the Messiah, the son of Ephraim, who will be descended from him, and through whom the house of Israel is to be victorious over Gog and his associates at the end of days.”

Exodus 40.12-15: After the anointing of the Tabernacle and its furniture, Moses is to anoint those who will serve in the priesthood. Just as the Targum sees the anointing of the Tabernacle to point to the days of the Messiah, we may also see in the anointing of the priests as pointing to the Anointed One himself, he who will be the great High Priest, ministering in the priesthood that is far greater than that of the earthly priests.
